In the early aughts, I spent a few years dabbling in the world of nude modeling. Why, exactly, a competent, intelligent, and worldly young woman might sacrifice her political ambitions purely by revealing to the world that, yes, she is in possession of a human body never needed to be clarified for any of us. Nearly two decades later, it would seem that those rules are still in effect. After surfacing on Reddit, an image purporting to be a self portrait snapped by Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has made the rounds online, including on the right-wing site The Daily Caller. Follow us on Instagram at nytopinion. As Motherboard reported shortly after the photo surfaced, the woman in the bathtub is the sex worker, political activist, and one-time Anthony Weiner sexting partner Sydney Leathers. And much of the response to its circulation has fixated on this fact: After The Daily Caller ran the photo, Ms. While this particular nude photo was just a nasty hoax, we live in a time when snapping a naked selfie has effectively become a rite of passage. There are certainly other, genuine naked photos somewhere out there — if not of Ms.
I saw them posted across every social media platform. I saw her naked body, saw it commented upon and reviewed, criticized. The tweet got 1, likes quickly. The next day it had 34,
The treatment of congresswoman Katie Hill, who was forced to resign this week, has all the hallmarks of revenge porn in a political system still entrenched in male privilege. The soon-to-be leader of America was grudgingly sorry when his remarks were made public just weeks before his election. A prominent Malaysian opposition legislator resigned today after photographs of her sleeping naked were circulated to the public by cell phone, an embarrassing disclosure that she slammed as a plot to discredit her party. The People's Justice Party, however, told year-old Elizabeth Wong to go on extended leave, and said it will decide later whether to accept her resignation from the central Selangor state assembly. It is the latest incident in Malaysian politics to intrude into the private lives of politicians, most of whom have been opposition figures. The government has denied a role in the scandals, including Wong's pictures. In an emotional news conference, Wong, a well-known human rights activist, did not deny that the pictures in question were of her. She said it was "an insidious and underhanded attempt" to smear her reputation, adding that "the real objective is to discredit the party. I wish to state that I am not ashamed of my sexuality as a woman and as a single person. I have broken no law," she said, her eyes brimming with tears. News reports say the photos were believed to have been taken by her ex-boyfriend without her knowledge in her home last year. She filed a police complaint Sunday after being informed that a newspaper had received the photographs from unidentified sources.
